POPMAX is a next-generation surface agitator lure, developed entirely from scratch—without using any data from the Megabass POPX mold. Built through fundamental research, handcrafted body carvings by Yuki Ito, and cutting-edge hydrodynamics, it was designed to target and trigger bites from cunning big fish that have learned to ignore flashy oversized plugs.

Despite its larger body, POPMAX boasts an exceptionally sensitive action response that reacts precisely to subtle rod movements. It delivers outstanding long-distance castability with astonishingly quiet water entry. At its core lies the patented ITO Water Chamber System (PAT.P), unlocking a new dimension of topwater dynamism for all anglers.

MAX Gravity Setting System (PAT.P)

POPMAX features a unique MAX Gravity Setting System, a patented internal design that contributes to a higher center of gravity—similar to the spinal rib structure found in some other Megabass models. This high center of gravity, combined with Megabass's Inertia Balancer System, produces a bold rolling action during dog-walking, often flashing the belly of the lure to provoke aggressive strikes.

Furthermore, the rear balancer is engineered to accommodate the large body of POPMAX when it collides with obstacles during casting. Instead of using traditional internal wall reinforcements (ribs or bracing), the POPMAX uses a unique balancer mount that supports the internal weight directly at its peak. This allows the resin body to flex slightly (body compliance) and absorb impact more effectively. This exclusive internal weight support structure is unique to POPMAX and is a key element of its advanced performance.

I.T.O. Hydromechanics (Water Flow System)

The cup of the POPMAX channels incoming water into six strategically placed water intakes, which direct the flow into internal water chambers. Once a certain level of water pressure is reached, the flow is released through two side-mounted ducts, creating an underflow effect. This dynamic change in internal chamber pressure mimics the function of a lip, enabling the lure to execute a dynamic dog-walking action with minimal rod input—even with its big bait size.

When the lure dives slightly underwater, simply retrieving it produces a darting, wobbling action, similar to a crankbait. This is made possible by the seamless water flow through the intakes, chambers, and ducts.

When the angler pauses rod movement, the rear-mounted balancer tilts the head upward, decreasing chamber pressure and returning the lure to a standard floating posture—just like a typical topwater plug. At this point, a light twitch of the rod tip will trigger a sharp splashing popper action.

This system is not only highly effective for bass fishing but also boasts an exceptional strike rate in offshore game fishing, particularly for species like mahi-mahi (dorado).

Shock-Resistant High-Strength Spinal Rib – BACK BONE RIB PAT.P

The immense casting momentum generated by big plugs often results in damage when they collide with rocks or hard structures. Many injection-molded big lures have succumbed to such impacts. The POPMAX addresses this with a uniquely engineered internal spinal rib, acting as the lure’s backbone to significantly enhance impact resistance.

Additionally, when scaled to the same size as POPX, the POPMAX’s spinal rib structure contributes to an approximately 13% higher center of gravity compared to POPX. This elevation of the center of mass sharpens its rolling action, delivering crisper, more aggressive movement—key for triggering reaction bites from wary predators.
