In 1999, the SIDEWINDER series was introduced by DEPS during an era dominated by lightweight tackle, when anglers were constantly seeking rods that were lighter and more sensitive.
Amid the rapid evolution toward ultra high-modulus carbon rods, the SIDEWINDER stood out in sharp contrast: a long, powerful rod packed with torque, almost going against the spirit of the time. Back then, many anglers wondered:
“What are you even supposed to fish with a rod like this?”
The answer was clear.
“It’s a rod built to catch big black bass.”
During the golden age of competitive bass fishing, targeting trophy-sized bass was a style reserved for a select group of highly specialized anglers. The SIDEWINDER series, initially launched with only three models — “Slap Shot,” “Super Border,” and “Out Cross” — was created exclusively for those dedicated to pursuing giant bass.
Its highly specialized design made it uniquely capable of handling techniques that are now considered standard in power fishing: slow-rolling heavy spinnerbaits, swimming rubber jigs, and throwing big baits.
For more than a decade, despite only minor cosmetic updates, its core performance remained unchanged — a defining trait behind its reputation and the loyalty it inspired among anglers.
In 2011, without altering the proven blank design, the series evolved into an even more precise and rigid version. The new SIDEWINDER, bearing the subtitle “Great Performer,” fully inherits the lineage of the second generation while preserving the uncompromising DNA of the original model intact.
